Canada is facing a growing mental health crisis among youth. With 1 in 5 adolescents experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression, the urgency to find effective and accessible solutions has never been greater. Physical activity, often overlooked as a mental health intervention, is emerging as a powerful and cost-effective tool for addressing this crisis.

The “Change the Pace" initiative calls for a 15% increase in physical activity across Canada by 2030, highlighting its transformative potential for individual health, the economy, and community well-being. Regular physical activity not only reduces the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes, but also helps manage stress, improve mood, and build resilience.

Among youth, these benefits are especially impactful. Studies show that physical activity can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, enhance self-esteem, and foster stronger social connections. Beyond the mental health benefits, movement also teaches life skills such as discipline, goal-setting, and perseverance—qualities that can support young people in academics, relationships, and their future careers. With 50% of mental health conditions beginning before the age of 14, early interventions through accessible programs like exercise are essential to setting young people on a path to lifelong health.

Despite its benefits, physical activity remains undervalued in many mental health strategies. Current treatments often focus on resource-intensive therapies that are neither cost-effective nor universally accessible. This leaves a gap in the mental health support system, particularly for underserved communities. By prioritizing movement, we can offer a more inclusive and scalable approach to supporting youth mental health.

Beyond individual health, increasing physical activity among youth has broader societal implications. Active communities tend to be safer, more connected, and more inclusive. Encouraging movement in schools, communities, and public spaces can contribute to stronger social bonds, reduced healthcare costs, and a healthier population overall. It’s not just about exercise; it’s about creating environments that enable everyone to thrive.

Team Unbreakable, through its running programs, is helping youth take their first steps toward resilience and well-being.
