Empowering Resilience in Canadian Youth: A Study
Are Canadian Youth Becoming Too Soft? Insights from a National Study
A recent survey by Scouts Canada highlights a growing concern among Canadians about the readiness of today’s youth to face life’s challenges. According to the study, 34.3% of Canadians question whether children aged 10 to 21 are developing the skills needed to succeed as adults. Additionally, 91.2% believe that youth lack essential soft skills such as stress management, problem-solving, and basic social etiquette.
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has amplified these challenges, with 94.7% of respondents feeling that disruptions during this period have left children at a disadvantage. Social media (39.3%), excessive screen time (25%), and peer pressure (16.2%) were identified as key factors hindering the development of resilience and life skills.
However, the survey also offers a clear path forward: more in-person social experiences, opportunities to lead and solve problems, and encouraging children to navigate conflicts on their own are viewed as critical solutions.
At Team Unbreakable, we share this mission to address these challenges. Our programs are designed to build resilience, foster leadership, and promote mental wellness in youth through the power of physical activity. By combining running with mental health education, we equip young people with the tools they need to cope with stress, boost their confidence, and develop essential life skills.
Physical activity is more than just exercise—it’s a proven strategy for improving mental health. Through our structured running program, students engage in meaningful activities that teach discipline, goal-setting, and perseverance. By participating in group runs and guided mental health discussions, they also learn the value of teamwork, communication, and emotional regulation.
The concerns raised in the Scouts Canada survey align closely with the objectives of our organization. We address the negative impacts of screen time and social media by offering real-world opportunities for youth to connect, grow, and thrive. Our program provides a safe and supportive environment for students to explore their potential, develop problem-solving skills, and embrace challenges with resilience.
The importance of these efforts cannot be overstated. As parents, educators, and community members, we must collectively ensure that the next generation is equipped to navigate the complexities of adulthood with confidence. By prioritizing initiatives that promote physical activity and mental wellness, we can empower youth to build a stronger foundation for their future.
At Team Unbreakable, we are proud to play a part in this critical mission. Together, we can make a difference—one run, one student, and one step at a time.
