About The Team Unbreakable Physical Health for Mental Health Run Program
Our Team Unbreakable Run Program has adopted the model of the highly successful youth at risk run-therapy program developed by Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga, Ontario. It has since been introduced as a recreational (non-treatment) program for kids and youth into elementary, middle and high schools across the province of Ontario.
Team Unbreakable is an 8-10 week Physical Health for Mental Health initiative for youth. We couple a standard, easy to follow “couch to 5k” training program with our Team Unbreakable Runners Logs and Mental Health Toolkit. Participants run, reflect on their mood, and record their progress before and after each run, and are led through the materials of our Mental Health Toolkit. These materials focus on our 9 themes – Physical Health for Mental Health, Goal Setting, Cramps and Stitches, Ready To Stretch/Ready To Move, Mindfulness, Motivation, Creating a Balanced Life, Self-Love/Self Care, and Gratitude – which are explored by way of PDF handouts and short videos available to all Team Unbreakable program participants.
We want youth to internalize this message : when I run, I feel better, experience less anxiety, improved self-esteem, and connect with a supportive, affirming community. Running is a tool I can carry with me throughout my life.
Recent science has shown there is a significant correlation between physical activity and improved mental health. We invite you to browse our “articles” section to read more. One excellent resource is Spark by Dr. John Ratey, a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. In his words, “Exercise is the single most powerful tool you have to optimize your brain function…exercise has a profound impact on cognitive abilities and mental health. It is simply one of the best treatments we have for most psychiatric problems.”
It’s how we want kids and youth to feel. Our goal is for young people to be strong and resilient. We want to give them the tools and resources that instill in them the confidence to overcome the challenges they face.
