Tackling Depression: Focus on Youth series starts Nov. 29

St. Joseph’s Healthcare  Hamilton has a stellar lineup of speakers who will be part of a one-day symposium on Tackling Depression – Focus on Youth.

The event is being held at the Art Gallery of Hamilton starting at 8 a.m. with a 4:00 p.m. closing.  To register for the event,which is $75 payable at the door, contact Laura Garrick atlgarrick@st.joes.ca.

CameronHelps will be well represented at the event.  Program Director John Knox from the charity will be attending.  Dr, Roberto Sassi, who was a guest speaker at one of our recent annual general meetings will be taking the podium at 9:45 a.m.  Dr. Sassi has been partnering with CameronHelps in the research field, to further investigate the influence of physical activity on mental health.

Dr. Anthony Levitt, a Professor in the department of psychiatry,University of Toronto, is the keynote speaker. Dr. Levitt’s research is focused on several related areas within the field of mood disorders. He has examined treatment parameters for seasonal depression, as well as the epidemiology of this disorder. His group has been involved in clinical trials in the long-term treatment of adolescents with depression. They have also examined new therapies for treatment-resistant depression.

Special guest speaker is Kevin Breel , who is a well-known speaker on the university circuit, talking about the “Confessions of a Depressed Comic.”  Jeff Whattam takes the stage at 2:45 to talk about Laughter Yoga. Jeff is a counselor who helps people discover effective ways to relieve stress and anxiety in order to live happy, joyful, and harmonious lives.

The final speaker is Dr. Zena Samaan. Her clinical interests are between psychiatry and medicine specifically, depression in association with obesity and cardiovascular disease. Her research interests are in psychiatric genetics, linkages of depression with cardiometabolic disorders, addiction and suicide risk factors.
