David Hampson and his partner Melissa were introduced to Team Unbreakable through a presentation to the High Park Running Room. That lead to the pair participating in the Toronto Bold and Cold 5K this fall. Then, after an invitation to participate in the Unbreakable 1000k challenge, David decided to take the plunge. He had originally planned to run 1,000k as a challenge to himself with Melissa. He said, “Since mental health is something important to both Melissa and I, it was decided that runs and races that support mental health initiatives would be priorities for us. It will also help us stay accountable.” For David have a goal will definitely help. “In 2017 I had done 50 km, did 350 km last year, but need to step up the mileage if I wanted to progress to do half and full marathons in the future. To keep myself motivated I tied charities to my goal.”
David has been a runner on and off his whole life but wasn’t taking it seriously until he started dating Melissa. She signed up for a 5K in May 2007 and he thought he sign up for a few as well. They both completed 14 races last year together.
The Burlington resident hopes to finish his 1,000k challenge by Thanksgiving if possible, depending on weather and injuries. David will try to to write about his running experiences, races, as well as promote awareness for mental health on social media and he’s sharing his Strava (social fitness network via GPS ) information, so anyone can follow his runs, and kms as he goes through the year.
